Speaking of old age, I was reminded of a quote I placed on the chalkboard prior to retirement, a quote which a female student disliked. I explained that "man" was the generic term for people but she would have none of it. Finally I asked if she’d be happy were I to insert women somewhere in the quote, "In this world of give and take, there are few men who can give what it takes." She eagerly agreed. So I added "women" at the end…"few men can give what it takes…and fewer women." She spoke not to me the remainder of the year. Time to lighten up.
